The
Home of Your Own (HOYO) Program gives technical assistance and
facilitates non-profit partnerships. It assists individuals with
developmental disabilities and their family members to access
affordable housing resources, including rental subsidies, existing
affordable units, accessing levels of support services and starting
development projects as well as down payment and technical
assistance for potential home owners. Home of Your
Own (HOYO) Program Success Stories-
Pete and Mary Pete lived for 10 years in
Fairview and always dreamed of a "home of his own." He enjoys his
dogs and model train hobby and few rentals could accommodate these
interests. Mary has always lived with caregivers so he desire was to
have a home where her caregiver could be close by if not in the home
with her. When Oregon Home of Your Own (HOYO) came
to the Coos Bay area, they found a perfect match with the Blaylocks.
By 1999, Pete and Mary had taken care of their credit problems and
had saved $1,500. Working with their realtor and the HOYO
facilitator, they were qualified for an &86,000 home with a $6,000
grant from HOYO toward down payment and closing costs, Pete and Mary
needed a duplex so they could accommodate Mary's caregiver. The
perfect home was located in North Bend and they put down
their earnest money, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The total house payment including taxes and insurance, on their home is $100% per month. The unit occupied by Mary's
caregiver brings in rental income of $325 per month. Section 8
rental assistance for the tenant is $225 so the caregiver only pays
$100 per month out of her income, The caregiver has mild
developmental disabilities herself and the "circle of support" for
these folks assists all of them with managing their finances.
Pete and Mary are hard at work putting in landscaping and developing
Pete's train models in a trailer given to the couple. The new yard
fencing please the pets and keeps them off the newly paved street. |
